Scottish social side The Bovril Boys are competing in their first international tournament this weekend.

The team begun when two of the players, Euan Bowen and Blair Ward, were at university in Aberdeen and wanted to form a sevens team to play in the Aberdeen and St Andrews University Sevens tournaments.

The first squad they put together consisted of friends they knew and things have gone from there.

The name came from the drink which is common at sports matches and the guys wanted to bring it from the stands to the pitch. Initially they looked at getting sponsored by Bovril but that fell through, however the name stuck.

Along with other sides with Scottish links, they will be playing in the 25th anniversary of the Stockholm 10s tournament.

Off to Sweden

The squad heading to Sweden consists of players from Stewart’s Melville, North Berwick, Deeside, Huntingdon, Haddington and 3P Training Ltd.

Dylan Russell from the team said: “This is the final tournament of the year which rounds off what has been our busiest season to date with eight tournaments played.

“Thanks go out to our sponsors First XV, The Whistlestop Barber Shop, Budgy Smuggler, Shanghai nightclub and Maximuscle.”
