University of St Andrews Director of Rugby Scott Lawson heaped praise on the University of Edinburgh, after his Varsity opponent put in an “outstanding” performance.
The former Scotland hooker, who was taking charge of just his second Varsity match, was on the receiving end of a 62-0 defeat this evening at BT Murrayfield, and, according to him, the nature of the loss was down to the quality of the opposition.
“It was very tough, I thought Edinburgh were outstanding, they were physical and clinical and it was too much to deal with for our guys,” Lawson explained.
“We have had a great pre-season, but Edinburgh were just too good.
“The injuries did not help continuity, but that came from being on the back foot and playing against a side playing at that intensity. We lost some key individuals in key collisions too.”
The Director of Rugby was keen to stress, however, that he could not fault his side’s effort.
“There was no lack of effort from St Andrews, I’ve said to the boys I’m immensely proud of them,” he added.
“A game like that can get away from you, our intensity and desire to give everything was not at fault, Edinburgh were just too good.
“As a coach I will learn from this and will look at how we can do things differently going forward. The game of rugby is all about learning.”
