Howden Celebrates the British & Irish Lions Squad

Lions legends join unveiling of hand-painted tribute to the newly named 2025 squad.

Principal Partner and Official Jersey Sponsor of The British & Irish Lions, global insurance group Howden, celebrates the newly announced Lions squad today by unveiling an enormous hand painted mural in East London alongside Lions legends Brian O’Driscoll, Gavin Hastings and Jamie Roberts, and Howden Group’s founder and CEO David Howden.

The 44ft Lion mural celebrates the special moment in which the names of selected players are written into the history books, representing the pinnacle of their playing careers. Each name will be hand-painted onto the mural as Head Coach Andy Farrell’s chosen squad is revealed by Lions Chairman Ieuan Evans live at The O2 in London.

Brian O’Driscoll, Jamie Roberts and Gavin Hastings all shared their personal journey and memories of that life-changing moment – when a player’s name is called as part of that exclusive group of representatives.

Brian O’Driscoll, Former Ireland Captain, Three-Time British & Irish Lion, said:

“What makes being a Lion so special is how quickly rivalry turns into family. You spend years trying to beat each other, but once you pull on that red jersey, every supporter from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland is right there with you. It is a feeling of pride and belonging that stays with you forever.”

Jamie Roberts, Former Wales Centre, Two-Time British & Irish Lion, agreed:

“Hearing your name announced for the Lions is a moment you never forget. I remember sitting in my old car, listening on the radio, feeling this unbelievable mix of shock, pride, and excitement. Seeing the names appear here today brings all those emotions flooding back and shows just how special this achievement is for every single player.”

Gavin Hastings, Former Scotland Captain, British & Irish Lions Captain (1993), said:

“Every name on that wall is now part of over a century of Lions tradition. It is not just about talent, it is about character, resilience, and inspiring millions back home.”

David Howden, Founder and CEO of the Howden Group, said:

“This is a special moment for these players. The pinnacle of their career, Each and every one of them has been on a huge journey to get there. And I want to see others following in their footsteps. That’s why we love supporting rugby at every level and why I’m so proud that the Howden name is on the jersey. I can’t wait for the tour to start.”

Located in Whitechapel, near to Aldgate East underground station in the City of London, the mural is expected to generate close to two million impressions over its ten-day installation and will remain in place until 18 May 2025. City workers, Howden employees, rugby fans, and passers-by are invited to witness this living celebration of rugby history and to share the moment on social media by tagging @HowdenInsurance and using #HowdenLions.
