Scottish Rugby Enhances Scotland Women Coaching Team with International Expertise

Scottish Rugby has made a significant move to bolster the Scotland Women’s national team by appointing Ioan Cunningham as Senior Assistant Coach. Cunningham will work alongside Head Coach Sione Fukofuka, who was appointed in December 2025, representing a notable enhancement of Scotland’s coaching capabilities as they prepare for the upcoming international competition cycle.

Cunningham comes with a remarkable background in international coaching, having led Wales Women from 2021 to 2024 and coached Fiji’s Fijiana team during the 2025 Rugby World Cup, where they competed against Scotland in a challenging pool. His coaching journey also encompasses positions with the Scarlets, Wales U20s, and various professional men’s teams, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of player development and high-performance rugby frameworks. This blend of experience is anticipated to introduce new ideas, tactical creativity, and performance insights to the Scotland Women’s programme.

The recent move reflects Scottish Rugby’s broader dedication to developing and enhancing women’s rugby across all levels. A centralised high-performance program has been set up at Oriam in Edinburgh, offering contracted and development players access to top-notch training, strength and conditioning, along with elite sports science support. This initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at uplifting the Scotland Women’s game and ensuring that the national team competes at the highest tiers in international events like the Celtic Challenge and upcoming World Cups.

Performance Director David Nucifora pointed out the strategic importance of Cunningham’s appointment, mentioning that his vast international experience and established success will accelerate player development and bolster the coaching culture throughout the program. Women’s Rugby Managing Director Gemma Fay stressed that investing in top-tier coaching talent is crucial to Scotland’s Women and Girls Rugby Strategy, which seeks to boost participation, enhance pathways, and establish sustainable success at the elite level.

Cunningham, who has personal connections to Scotland, shared his enthusiasm about joining the coaching staff, expressing his eagerness to assist players in realising their full potential while nurturing a culture of resilience, innovation, and professionalism. He also underscored the chance to contribute to a program that prioritises long-term growth, high-performance excellence, and competitive success on the international front.

This appointment highlights a wider trend in Scottish Rugby: merging local talent with global expertise to create strong pathways for players, coaches, and support staff. By incorporating Cunningham into the coaching team, Scotland is setting its women’s team up to compete more regularly with the top nations in women’s rugby, while also motivating the next generation of female athletes throughout the country.

With an enhanced coaching staff, a centralised performance program, and a focused strategy on player development, Scottish Rugby is demonstrating its goal to transform the Scotland Women’s team into a powerhouse in international rugby.

In the upcoming months, the team will gain from Cunningham’s knowledge and perspective, along with ongoing investment in the necessary infrastructure and support systems to ensure lasting success on the global stage.
