Williamson Commits to Warriors with New Deal

Max Williamson has extended his contract with Glasgow Warriors, committing his future to the club following a breakout spell in the professional game.

The 22-year-old second-row made his return from injury in Friday night’s Investec Champions Cup quarter-final against Leinster, having quickly become a fixture for both club and country in the 2023/24 campaign.

Williamson made his senior debut in a 26-12 win over Benetton at Scotstoun, cheered on by family from the Main Stand. He went on to make 19 appearances in that title-winning season, including off-the-bench contributions in the BKT URC quarter-final and semi-final.

This season has seen the former Scotland U20 forward continue to impress, playing in each of the club’s first six games and featuring in a landmark win over the DHL Stormers in Stellenbosch — Glasgow’s first regular-season victory in South Africa since 2018/19.

His form earned him a call-up to the Scotland squad for the 2024 Skyscanner Summer Tour. Williamson made his senior international debut in Ottawa, starting in the 73-12 win over Canada. He went on to feature in all four summer Tests and later appeared off the bench at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in matches against Fiji and South Africa.

Speaking to glasgowwarriors.org, Williamson said:
“I’m extremely excited.”

“The last few months obviously haven’t been ideal after my injury, but it’s been an absolutely brilliant year and I’m so pleased to be back fit and playing again.”

“Winning the league last season was an amazing experience for everyone – the entire playoff run was something I’ll never forget. Winning away to the Stormers this year, too, in Richie’s last game for us, that was a really special moment.”

“The group of second-rowers here has been massive for my development, too. The experience that JP and Scott bring has been invaluable and have been great mentors for me at the set-piece, and working with Alex and Jare has helped us all drive each other forward this year.”

“I don’t have any long-term goals, but I just want to keep improving week on week and putting myself in the best shape possible to get more game time.”

“I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years – we’re building something special here and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Head Coach Franco Smith added:

“Max is a young player who we believe has the potential to be a key player for both Glasgow Warriors and Scotland for many years to come.”

“His performances both last season and prior to his injury this season showcased his ability both at the set-piece and in the loose, and his skillset make him a real asset for our squad.”

“He is extremely passionate about representing this club, and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop here at Scotstoun.”
